Welcome to Altrincham and Hale Chess Club!

** Latest news **

In April 2023, after a three year break, club meetings resumed. Our last meeting had been in March 2020, at which point Covid put an end to things. When things started to open up in the summer of 2021, we found that we were unable to continue at our previous venue. With Covid levels still high, and no venue, there was little enthusiasm amongst members for a resumption of club meetings, though we did take part in the MCF online league. At the beginning of 2023 people were a lot more confident about resuming, and we are delighted to have been able to obtain a regular venue at Timperley Village Club.

For new and potential members

We are always keen to welcome new members to Altrincham and Hale Chess Club. We are a friendly chess club with a wide range of playing strengths.

As well as Altrincham and Hale, we are the local chess club for Timperley and Sale and surrounding areas. The aim of the club is to give our members the opportunity to play and improve their chess and, above all, to enjoy it. While we have members of all ages, we are always keen to encourage junior chess players, though we ask that a parent or carer accompanies juniors when they visit the club. If you are new to club chess, don’t worry about asking about using chess clocks, recording moves, chess ratings or anything else – there will always be members who will be happy to help.

The club meets every Monday (except Bank Holidays) from 7.30 p.m. in a room at Timperley Village Club near the crossroads in the centre of Timperley. (see How to find us page for a map). The club is open throughout the year, although the main playing season is from September to April.

Although we are a relatively small club, our teams play in a number of leagues:
· We have a team in the Manchester Chess Federation league, playing matches at home and away with other clubs around the M60 ring during the Winter season.
· We also run teams in the Stockport and District Chess League, which covers Stockport and the surrounding area, also during the Winter season.
· The South East Lancashire Summer League offers a chance to continue competitive chess against other clubs around Manchester during the 'close' season from June to September.
· There are also knock-out cup competitions attached to these leagues.

We encourage all members to play in team matches appropriate to their strength and usually share cars for away matches.

The club runs a number of internal competitions, which all members are welcome to play in:
· The main club competition – split into two divisions so everyone has a chance
· Quick play competitions
· Handicap competition - mainly for fun

Altrincham and Hale Chess Club was founded over 100 years ago and was originally known as The St Margaret’s Chess Club.
