17/02/2025 - Altrincham 1 Blue Club 3
Faris won on board 4 after winning huge amounts of material. Taarush missed a tactic when in a good position, and went on to lose. Bill entombed one of his Knights in the corner, which left him unable to ward off his opponent's attack. Alan mis-read his clock, thinking he was in time trouble when in fact he had over 40 minutes left, and as a result blundered in a level position.
10/02/2025 - Glossop ½ Altrincham 3½
At one point it seemed we would have to default 2 boards, as only Vijay and Alan had registered willingness to play. But we managed to get Bill and Vinay to play at the last minute, and both won, as did Alan. Vijay drew on board 1.
13/01/2025 - Altrincham 2 Chorlton P 2
The first match of 2025 was a creditable draw against the current league leaders. All the games were won by the player with the Black pieces! First to finish was Thomas Hague with a quick win. Faris battled on after losing the exchange, but was unable to save a draw, and with Vinay also losing, it was left to 12 year old Taarush to save the match, which he duly did with an impressive win, see below.
John Donegan (1413) v Taarush Goel (1364)
02/12/2024 - Northenden 1 Altrincham 3
The team gained its first win, despite being outrated on 3 of the 4 boards.
Steve Ward, who has played only one serious game since the Covid pandemic, gallantly stepped in to captain the team after the late withdrawal of Alan Tyson due to illness. Steve played on board 3 and reckoned he was lucky to win as his opponent gave up too soon.
Vinay won in about 5 minutes on board 4! His first win for the club and hopefully the first of many. Thomas won on board 1, and Taarush played well and with composure on board 2, against an experienced opponent.
04/11/2024 - Altrincham 1 Stockport 3
Tony Lane reports - Steve Burgess blundered a piece on about move 7 and his junior opponent avoided any mistakes thereafter. Faris played fairly solidly but lost a central pawn and was then passive throughout the game. His opponent played well and rolled his connected central pawns forward and was able to promote one and win. Thomas Hague had a massive time advantage and was a couple of pawns up but still contrived to give his opponent a chance. However, his opponent squandered his opportunity after getting his sole queenside pawn to the seventh rank and eventually lost on time. Bill was ahead up to the late middle game but exchanged pieces unwisely and lost an endgame which both players played badly!
30/09/2024 - Altrincham 1½ East Cheshire 2½
Our first Limit League match for 5 years ended in a narrow defeat to East Cheshire. Tony Lane reports - "Watching the start of the match, I thought we were looking at an emphatic victory. Alan's opponent blundered a piece in the opening. Faris won a couple of pawns and was positionally dominant. Steve Burgess was solid in the opening. Vinay had a crushing kingside attack. Faris finished first with a draw. Although he simplified to Q,R and pawns ending which was clearly won due to his extra pawns, he let his opponent back into the game by ignoring his only chance which was based on a back rank mate. After escaping still a pawn up and exchanging queens he still failed to win the endgame, but he is definitely worthy of a regular team place. Unbelievably, Vinay failed to crush his opponent, allowed him to remove some pressure by exchanging queens and then blundered a piece. His natural ability gets him into these positions but he squanders them by simply moving too quickly. He made all his moves (about 20) in just a few minutes. Alan did make an error at the beginning of the end game but still managed to convert his material advantage. Steve lost a piece which his opponent could have won earlier in the game but missed the chance. Things went downhill from there and he played on increments for some time before losing on time."
There will be a total of 11 matches for this team, so we hope to share them between everyone who wants to play.
