Seasons 2020-21 to 2023-24

No competition was held in 2020-21 & 2021-22. We did not enter a team in 2022-23 or 2023-24.

2019-20

We did not take part in the Limit League this season.

2018-19 Team Captain's Report

Thanks to all those who played, 12 in total. The league included 7 teams and we played 12 matches playing the other 6 teams home and away. We finished mid table, 4th place with 13 points as had 3rd placed Macclesfield and with one win less than we had, but with 26 game points Macclesfield did better than us as our total was only 21½.

Although it is nice to win matches, and we won 4, it was not my overriding purpose but instead to try and select if available players who would have fair games against opponents as far as possible of similar ability.

The first half of the season was quite reasonable as we drew the first 4 games including that against the eventual league winners Stockport. We then lost to Stockport in the new year but then beat Macclesfield.

We then had a hiccup against new to the league Ashton. Initially no one responded to my request for players in the away match. So the match was lost with 4 defaults. We then played Ashton at home. I was advised that Ashton was a team of youngsters so I should use the opportunity to play not too strong players. I included one strong player Stuart Sumner but nevertheless the team lost 4 nil. Ashton accounted for 2 of our 3 losses in the season. We then won three of the last 4 matches and drew the other. Overall not too bad.

I managed to give places to 12 players through the season but had to pick higher graded players for the top boards and was able to choose from a small number of willing players for this and I am grateful to Mike Davies who played 7 matches, the most by anyone on the team and six of those were on board 1 with 4 losses and three wins. Stuart Sumner played 6 matches with 4 draws and 1 win and loss. Stuart moved around from boards 1 to 3. Bill McCartney and Jeff Foy played 5 each, Jeff with 4 wins and a draw, Bill unfortunately lost 3 but was playing higher boards, mainly on 2, than Jeff. Peter Hawes, Kip Sumner and Shishir Sonni each played 3 games, Kip had 2 wins and a loss, Peter 3 games on board 2 with a win, a draw and a loss and Shashir in his first season 3 losses but promises well for the future. Thomas Hague played twice winning both and Vijay Kakarparthi once and that with a win on board 1. Two other youngsters, Medha Alapati and Max Ye joined the team and played a game each and I hope they will feature and progress in future games with the club. I played 6 games, all but 1 in away matches to leave board 4 clear for others in home matches. I only won 2 and lost 4.

I think we had a decent season, finished satisfactorily placed, introduced 3 youngsters and again I wish to thank all who took part through the season.

Well done to Medha Alapati, who drew her debut game for the team, helping them to a narrow win. Mike Davies and Peter Hawes won to give the team a winning end to the season.

19/03/2019 Altrincham 0 Ashton 4

It was good to see the youngsters from Ashton's Limit League team at our club, and for two of our juniors, Max and Shishir, to have the chance to play them on boards 3 & 4. Although both lost, they played well and will I'm sure have learned from the experience. Meanwhile, two of our not-so-junior players, Stuart and Kip, played on the top two boards and they too found their well trained opponents too hot to handle!

The team's first win of the season, with a draw from Stuart and wins for Jeff and Thomas, shown below.

2017-18 Team Captain's Report

I wish to thank all the players who competed for the limit League team in this round and I also offer my congratulations to the other teams who have done well in the past year.

The Limit League is restricted to players graded below 121 including players without a grading and is intended to allow new and weaker players to enjoy competitive chess with people of similar ability.

There were 5 teams in the league this season. The league was contested by each team playing the 4 others on a home and away basis. We therefore played 8 matches. Of the 8 matches we played only 1 was won. We came last in the league. We did draw 3 matches but lost the other 4. Each team consists of 4 players and so a total of 32 games were played and overall. 12 games were won, 4 drawn and 16 lost. In total 11 players contributed to the 32 games played.

We drew our first match which was against East Cheshire and at home. Recent addition to the club Rob Ignatowicz achieved a draw on board 1 and Peter Hawes won on 2.

Our next match was also drawn, an away match at Denton with Vijay winning on board 1 and I won on 2. Newcomer Matthew Harris played on 4, his only match for the club as it turned out but he lost as did Pete Arland on 3. Both have now left the club with Pete retiring and moving to the Pennines.

Our 3rd match was lost but we were outgraded on boards 1 to 3 with only Vijay achieving a draw and that against an opponent graded 26 points higher. Kip Sumner made his first appearance of the year on board 4 and won although against an opponent with a lower grading.

Our 4th match was lost, even Vijay and Kip were unable to avoid losing but we were outgraded on each board. I won on board 2.

We then lost our 5th match. I swapped Peter Hawes and Rob Ignatowicz round as Rob had drawn and Peter won in their last match but whilst Rob won on 2 Peter lost on 1. Nobody else won.

Our 6th match saw newcomer Mike Davies on the team and on board 1, and he won, and nobody lost and we won. The match was away at Macclesfield and the potholes on the way caused more damage than the Macclesfield team.

Our next match was drawn with Thomas Hague playing his only game for the team this season but losing on 1. Mike Davies and Peter Hawes both won again and as I lost the match was drawn.

Our final effort was again a lost match but we welcomed Shishir Sonni for his first match on 4, he lost but respectably. I swapped Peter Hawes and Rob Ignatowicz around again but this time Rob lost on 1 and Peter won on 2.

During the season 5 players competed on board 1 and also 5 on 2. Peter Hawes and Vijay both played 4 matches with Peter winning 3 and Vijay 2 with 1 draw. Mike Davies also played twice and won both. Rob Ignatowicz played 3 games win draw and loss and Thomas Hague lost his only match at this level. On the lower boards 4 people played on 3 and 6 people shared board 4. Pete Arland and Kip Sumner each played 3 times with Kip winning twice but Pete lost all 3 of his matches. Denis Osborn played twice, Matthew Harris once and Shishir Sonni once.

24/04/2018 - Altrincham 1 Denton 3

The final match of the season saw the first game for young Shishir, a tough debut against the Limit League champions Denton. Steve reports that Shishir did well. His game went to 39 moves when he was caught by a knight forking K and Q but up till then he seemed steady and his opponent complimented him on a good game which had not been an easy win. The only winner for our team was Peter, who has been in excellent form this season with 8 wins and a draw from his 10 games.

10/01/2018 - East Cheshire 3 Altrincham 1

With more luck or a little more awareness we could have drawn or won. Vijay played a close game on board 1 losing on time but near to the end when time was very short for both players Vijay's opponent made an illegal move and Vijay could have claimed a 2 minute penalty which could well have decided the game in his favour but the penalty passed unclaimed. I was fortunate on board two to win when running two separate attacks my opponent wisely withdrew his queen from one defence where it would have been vulnerable only to then leave an attack on rook and king by my knight unopposed but the queen was moved to a square then also attacked by the moved knight, spoilt for choice! Kip had a promising strong central attack with knight, queen and rook aiming for a back row with a king tucked behind three unmoved pawns and so vulnerable to a sacrifice of rook and possibly queen if played correctly but Kip may have become over excited and advanced a pawn defending the lead knight which then fell leaving his queen under threat and he resigned soon after. Denis gamely fought on board 4 but lost to a stronger opponent.

11/12/2017 - Wilmslow 2½ Altrincham 1½

We were outgraded by over 20 points on each of the first 3 boards and although playing well we managed only a draw and 2 losses on these boards. Kip Sumner was able to achieve a win on board 4 where his game opened with both f knights moving first. Kip managed to gradually achieve a winning position. Vijay on board one settled for a draw when although he had a slight advantage he believed he was faced with either accepting a draw through perpetual check or the alternative of a risky game which might be lost. My own game was a quiet queen's pawn opening in which mid game I took a pawn advantage with a large time advantage also but feeling I had to be positive and advance I left myself open to an attack by the rook down the centre and the queen down the kingside both uniting to force defeat.

15/11/2017 - Denton 2 Altrincham 2

On each board the opposition had higher grades than our team, so to win two of the games was a good result. Denton played three of the team that helped them win their previous match 3-1. Our two players who lost played well and for both this was their first match of the season and for Matthew his first league game ever. Vijay opened with e4 and his opponent replied with the modern Scandinavian defence. The game was fairly equal until the middle game. Vijay's opponent went for exchanges which left Vijay with the positional advantage. Vijay took further pieces when his opponent was looking for tactical improvement in the hope of drawing with perpetual check but miscalculated. It was a Rook end game while Vijay had the extra bishop. Only the loss on time prevented Vijay's king having his opponent's pawns on toast before the game was conceded. My own game soon went off piste and at move 10 I saw that I could attack 2 undefended pawns with my queen and only one could be protected. My opponent tried to save matters by bringing his knight into the fray with the possibility of a fork on my rook and uncastled king but the net result was the loss of a pawn and the knight. My opponent used up much of his time trying to think of ways to recover lost ground but failed and lost on time. (Steve Ward)

03/10/2017 - Altrincham 2 East Cheshire 2

Rob Ignatowicz made his debut for the club, playing his first competitive game for many years, and achieved a completely won position but unfortunately had to concede a draw after a time trouble blunder. Steve Ward was also unable to convert a winning position, at one stage several pawns up. Peter had a good win, skewering his opponent's Queen, but Denis was well out-graded and had to accept defeat, leaving the match tied.

2016-17

We did not take part in the Limit League this season.

2015-16 Team Captain's Report

Firstly I would like to thank all club members who played for the team during this year.

The Limit League consisted of 6 teams and each team played 10 matches. We won only 2 of our matches, the lowest total for any team in the Limit League, but we also lost only 3 matches, the second lowest in the league with Stockport who won the league losing no matches. So we also drew 5 matches, the highest of any team in the league. The end result was a mid table placing of third out of six.

For our first 3 matches we had to default on one board each match through being unable to find sufficient players and in one match I recollect that Tom Hague was stuck in a motorway logjam. To the best of my recollection we have not had to default before, nevertheless we drew all 3 of these matches. Fortunately for the next match we were able to field a full team against East Cheshire, but lost the match 1-3.

Seemingly out of character we then also fielded a full team against Marple and then Macclesfield and we won both matches 4-0. We had lost only one out of our first six - giddy heights. But there then followed 2 draws and 2 losses to finish the season and leave us mid table at the close.

Individually special mention must be made for Vijay who I am grateful to say joined our club partway through the season and has improved well. The special mention is for the fact that he was the only player in the whole season of 40 games to earn a draw for the team.

As in previous seasons I did not perform well for the team playing in all ten matches but winning only 3. Steve Douglas contributed the next highest number of appearances and did very well to win 6 out of 7 games played. He has played so well that he is now not qualified to play in the Limit League as his grading is too high. Thomas Hague as in previous seasons contributed well and he also lost only one game, winning 4 of the 5 he played.

Callum McNulty, Harry Hague and Wayne Kranz each won as many games as they lost ending the season with 50% records, oh how I envy them. Callum and Harry played twice each and Wayne as well as playing for his own team played 4 matches for my team - thanks.

Vijay as I have said stands apart as the only player to draw a game in the season but apart from that he did well to win two of his games and lose only one other. Pete Arland is the team's only 100% winner by playing 1 and won 1. Rob Isaac agreed to play in one match, Rob turned up but his opponent did not. Denis was also a 100% player but unfortunately played 1 lost 1 but nevertheless contributed and I am grateful.

12/04/2016 - Stockport 2 Altrincham 2

The team finished the season with a creditable draw against the Limit League champions, and are therefore the only team that Stockport have failed to beat this season. We have finished 3rd out of 6 teams. Winners were Steve Douglas, and Vijay who gained revenge against a higher graded opponent who had earlier in the season beaten him in a B team match.

22/03/2016 - Altrincham 1½ Denton 2½

A solid draw from Vijay, but Steve Ward succumbed to a kingside attack. Thomas Hague fell victim to a sharp line in the Two Knights' defence, but Harry restored family pride with the following fine win.

26/01/2016 - Altrincham 4 Macclesfield 0

A second consecutive 4-0 win took the team to second place in the league. Vijay gave us a good start with a quick win, but the other games took a lot longer. Eventually Steve Ward was able to demonstrate the superiority of his bishop over his opponent's knight in a protracted endgame. Steve Douglas finished next, winning a knight and pawn ending due mainly to a space advantage which eventually led to his opponent losing pawns. Thomas rounded things off on board 1 when he trapped his opponent's queen in the corner.

10/11/2015 - Altrincham 1 East Cheshire 3

The team finally managed to field four players, but this did not prevent it suffering its first defeat of the season. Harry and Steve Douglas both lost early on, but Thomas played a fine game (see below) to bring the score back to 1-2. This gave Steve Ward the chance to save the match. In a long, complex struggle he seemed to be under some pressure, but defended well before taking advantage of a pin on his opponent's knight to win a pawn. It was difficult to tell who was better in the ensuing Queen & Rook ending, as both sides had dangerous passed pawns. The tide finally turned against Steve after some weakening Kingside pawn moves, soon after which he walked his King into a mating net which his opponent was quick to exploit.

04/11/2015 - Denton 2 Altrincham 2

Again we only had three players available. This time the wins came from Wayne and Steve Douglas.
Wayne Kranz (79) vs Alan Williamson (83)

20/10/2015 - Altrincham 2 Stockport 2

Once again the team had to default a board, with Tom Hague held up by a major motorway delay. Callum and Wayne scored the wins to tie the match.

07/10/2015 - East Cheshire 2 Altrincham 2

The team did well to draw this match as they were only able to raise three players. Steve Ward won, playing the Italian opening and giving up B & N on f7 early on for R & P. After some exchanges he then won a knight for a pawn after which he quickly won more pawns, forcing resignation on move 55. Steve Douglas also won when his opponent self destructed his king's defences.

2014-15 Team captain's report

Thank you to all who competed for the team this year. There were 11 members who played for the team including 2 new competitors, Harry Hague and Daniel Clucas who both made creditable starts and hopefully will be able to play again for the team.

This season was a little different than last in that in addition to the Limit League team, which is restricted to players with a grading of 120 and below, the club decided to put in a third team in the lower Stockport league, division 3, which did draw on some of the players graded below 120 as well as those above that grading but also due to the reduced number of teams involved in the Limit League a vote at the Stockport League AFM was taken to increase the number of games played in the league to 12, which meant playing each team 3 times as there were only 5 teams in the league. Despite this increase in games and some players also playing for the league 3 team we were still able to field a full team for every game, even one extra for the game at Macclesfield - my apologies again to Wayne.

We finished mid table, 3rd out of 5 with Marple way ahead winners on 20 points, Denton clearly bottom with 7 and then Macclesfield, Alt & Hale and East Cheshire with 10, 11 and 12 points respectively. We played 12 matches with 3 wins 5 draws and 4 losses, overall 25 games for and 23 against the league table shows.

Board 1 players were Callum McNulty who played all 4 of his games on board 1 and with 2 wins, one loss and one draw. Steve Douglas played 6 games with 2 of those on board 1 and 4 games on board 2. Results were 1 win 3 draws and 2 losses. Thomas Hague played 5 games with one of those on board 2, results 3 wins 1 draw and 1 loss. David Hughes made a guest appearance and played 2 games on 1 and won both. So overall quite a strong performance on board 1.

The new boys did well. Both played only on board 4 but Daniel won both games he played and Harry played 3 and got the full set of 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss. Thanks and well done to both. My thanks also to the other 5 players whose details I will not spend too much time on, the results were generally average as one would expect from a team that finished mid table but Pete Arland played 6 games with 3 wins, Denis Osborne played 2 games with 1 win, Wayne 3 games with 1 win. Rob Isaac 3 games and no wins but seems to be making amazing progress since and I hope will continue to play, possibly above me in the pecking order. Oh yes, and one other, me, played 12 but only 2 wins - my apologies, must try harder or drop down a board or two.

Thanks again to all those who played and travelled out to various parts of Cheshire.

15/04/2015 East Cheshire 1½ Altrincham 2½

Thomas continued with last year's tactics of arriving 10 minutes late and then winning, I suggested it must be the adrenalin rush he gets that leads to success. It seems to work for Harry as well who obviously wasn't too flustered. A good result for Harry who has now played 3 games in the season and so should appear on the Stockport League table for players' current performance and I would think several places from the bottom of the table. I (Steve W) played a gruelling match where victory would depend on promoting one of two pawns. The pawn was unstoppable on row 2 so I conceded. Steve D achieved a Houdini act after blundering a piece, after which his opponent was unable to finish him off, so the drawn game won us the match.

09/03/2015 Macclesfield 2½ Altrincham 1½

A win for David Hughes, draw for Steve Douglas, and defeats for Steve Ward and Pete Arland. Below is Steve D's game.

Play online chess

04/03/2015 East Cheshire 2½ Altrincham 1½

A narrow defeat, but a good performance with three of the team drawing against higher rated opponents. Rob was a pawn up for most of his game and drew comfortably. Steve Douglas had a lost position, a rook ending where his opponent had three connected passed pawns, but his opponent blundered the middle pawn, and the resultant R vs R + RP + BP ending is often impossible to win, and this was no exception. I (SW) played black and the match was equal in material for most of the game but with me seeming weak on position but my opponent's king side was a pawn short and I started to move my pawns forward which produced a threat not to be ignored. We were both left with king and pawns spread across the board and each felt we could not move our king to one side without leaving the other vulnerable so as the last game standing we settled for a draw.

24/02/2015 Altrincham 3 Denton 1

A reversal of the result of the last match with Denton, just three weeks ago. Daniel won quickly, taking full advantage of his opponent's mistakes to win a piece, then the queen in quick succession. The other three games lasted much longer. Callum reached a queen & knight ending with symmetrical pawns, which appeared to be dead drawn, but his opponent tried too hard to get blood from a stone, giving Callum the opportunity to win to make the score 2-0. Steve Ward looked to have a tricky position, with his opponent having two connected passed pawns, but Steve defended well, and subsequently won a rook and the game, to take revenge on the same opponent who beat him three weeks ago. Pete seemed to have every chance of completing a whitewash, but a mistake in an advantageous position allowed his opponent to turn the tables.

05/02/2015 Marple 2½ Altrincham 1½

This week we have played the top two teams and unfortunately lost to both. However another win for Pete Arland and my draw against an opponent who although with an estimated grading below mine has played six times this season without losing and winning 4 so OK. Thomas struggled on late into the night but to no avail and Steve is probably still a bit rusty and needs to play more, I will try to give you that opportunity.

03/02/2015 Altrincham 1 Denton 3

Steve Ward reports - Messrs Hague each drew and Rob and I both lost but we all put up decent resistance. We were each outgraded. From the Stockport league site I see that Thomas's opponent Phil Boyd is graded 117 and playing at 122. My opponent Eric Lesnik is graded 114, but he was having a bad season having lost all 3 of his matches and being rated 66 but his true form showed last night. Rob's opponent Tom Ireland who played on their top board when we played them in November is grade 107 and playing at around that standard whilst Harry's opponent Lee Maycock, also a new starter on an estimated grade of 30, is playing at 63. He played on board 4 in our last meeting when he beat Wayne Kranz so well done Harry to get a draw.

23/10/2014 Marple 2 Altrincham 2

David Hughes took top board whilst he is qualified, and probably for this season only, for Limit League chess, and won with a good checkmate. Steve played a slow and thoughtful game with seemingly not much in it but having a better pawn structure until his opponent checkmated with a good rook and knight combining with a lonesome pawn on h6. Wayne seems to be regaining form after some losses last year and found mate for a good win after about half an hour. Denis was last man down for the second time this week, but this time it was a loss after the win on Tuesday, although he did have unseen opportunities to do better but was finally undone by a knight fork on king and rook which left him with nothing left to play with or for, so he resigned and we went home.

21/10/2014 Altrincham 2 East Cheshire 2

Tom Hague won in his usual whirlwind style, but this was followed by defeats for Pete and Steve W, who seemed at one point to have a winning endgame. So it was left to Denis to save the match, eventually making his extra piece tell in a protracted endgame.

07/10/2014 Altrincham 1½ Marple 2½

Callum returned to our team after missing last season, but showed no sign of rustiness and comfortably held a draw against Marple's Tony Kay, who is the highest graded player eligible for the Limit League. The two Steves lost, but Daniel Clucas on his debut for the club had a fine win on board 4, having a big advantage when his opponent overstepped the time limit.

2013-14 Team captain's report

Firstly my thanks to those who played for the team in the league. We achieved full turnout for every match.

There were six teams, therefore 10 matches and 40 games. We won four matches with one drawn and came 4th. Of the 40 games we won 19 and lost 18.

The highest graded player against us was beaten by Steve Douglas in the first match of the season, but then he lost in the next match to the lowest graded player that he played against in the league this season, but overall played 8 matches, winning 5, mainly on board 2 & 1.

I played in all 10 matches, mainly board 3, and mainly against players of a lower grade, with 6 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses.

Unluckily Rob Isaac and Wayne Kranz lost most of their matches but I am sure will do much better next season as they both continue to beat me whenever I play them.

Pete Arland played 6 but only won 2 but played mainly on board 1, so hard work and thanks for taking top board.

Thomas Hague had a great start to the season, first 3 matches, always turns up after we have started, then leaves early with an apologetic shrug of shoulders explaining he has won his match already, but spoilt with loss in his last match, all on board 1 or 2 so good season.

Denis played 3 and won 1.

David Johnson, an unlucky draw and then a win, obviously too good for this league and is now grade over 120.

Thanks again for all players' efforts, home and away, and a fairly decent effort for the lower grade players in the club. I think it was worthwhile being in the Limit League.

Defeats for Denis and Tom Hague were not a promising start, but David Johnson won his game against the same player he had defeated in the previous week's A team match, to bring the score to 1-2. Steve Ward then levelled the scores, converting a knight v bishop endgame where he had a couple of extra pawns.

04/03/2014 Altrincham 3 Marple 1

Wins from Tom Hague, Pete Arland and Steve Ward enabled us to complete the double over Marple.

19/02/2014 East Cheshire 2½ Altrincham 1½

The winning run came to an end with this narrow defeat. The only good news was that Wayne broke his duck with a win on board 4, against a player who had previously scored 4½ from 6 games this season. The other scorer was Steve Ward, who drew.

04/02/2014 Altrincham 4 Macclesfield 0

We achieved the first ever clean sweep by any team in the short history of the Limit League, and gained revenge for a defeat by Macclesfield earlier in the season. Prior to this match Macclesfield were top of the table, so it was especially satisfying. The team was Tom Hague, Pete Arland and the two Steves.

07/01/2014 Altrincham 2½ Denton 1½

David Johnson made his debut for the club and was thrown in at the deep end on board 1. He gained a vital draw which enabled us to win the match by the narrowest of margins, with Steve Douglas and Steve Ward both winning.
